Google Shopping Ads for Shopify, Built on a Clean Product Feed

Shopping ads show your product, price and store name directly in Google results, often before a shopper sees a single text ad. What decides how often they show, and to whom, is mostly your product feed. We manage Google Shopping ads for Shopify and Shopify Plus stores from the feed up: Merchant Center setup, feed optimisation, disapproval fixes, free listings and Standard Shopping campaigns grouped and bid by margin.

Shopping is one channel inside our Shopify ads management programme, which sets budgets across Google and Meta.

01

What Shopping ads management covers

Google Shopping ads are product listing ads created from a product feed rather than from keywords. The feed, held in Google Merchant Center, supplies each product's title, image, price, availability and identifiers, and Google matches those products to searches. Shopping ads management is the work of keeping that feed accurate and complete, fixing products Google rejects, and structuring and bidding the campaigns so spend goes to the products that make money.

For a Shopify store, the service covers:

  • Merchant Center account setup and connection to Shopify
  • feed optimisation: titles, descriptions, identifiers, categories, variants and images
  • diagnosing and fixing product disapprovals and account warnings
  • free listings across Google surfaces
  • Standard Shopping campaign structure, product groups and negative keywords
  • bidding by margin using custom labels
  • monthly reporting on product-level performance
02

Merchant Center setup for Shopify

Most Shopify stores connect to Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube app. It syncs products and variants, keeps prices and stock up to date, and verifies your domain. For many catalogues that is enough. Larger or more complex catalogues sometimes need a feed management app that allows more control over how Shopify data becomes feed attributes.

OptionGood forLimits to watch
Google & YouTube appMost stores, straightforward catalogues, fast setupLess control over title rewrites and attribute rules
Feed management appLarge catalogues, several markets, complex variantsAnother app to configure, maintain and monitor
Supplemental feed in Merchant CenterAdding custom labels or overriding fields without changing Shopify dataNeeds a clear owner so it does not drift out of date

Whichever route we use, we check the basics that decide whether Google trusts the account: a verified and claimed domain, shipping settings that match what checkout charges, a clear returns policy, visible contact details, and prices on the site that match the feed. Missing any of these is a common reason for account-level warnings.

For Shopify Plus stores selling in several Shopify Markets, each target country needs a feed with the right currency, language and shipping. We map each market to its Merchant Center setup so the price a shopper sees in the ad matches the price on that market's storefront.

03

Product feed optimisation

A strong feed gives Google more reasons to show your products for the right searches. Most Shopify feeds are built straight from product data that was written for the store, not for search, so there is usually room to improve.

Titles that match how people search

Titles carry most of the weight in matching. Google shows only the first part of a long title, so the most important words should come first. A good pattern is brand, product type, key attribute and variant detail, for example "Brand Merino Wool Crew Neck Jumper, Navy, Medium". We rewrite titles through feed rules or supplemental feeds where the storefront title needs to stay short. If the product copy itself needs work, our product description and feed title writing service can rewrite it at the source.

Identifiers: GTIN, MPN and brand

GTINs help Google match your product to its catalogue and to searches for that exact item. In Shopify, the barcode field on each variant feeds the GTIN. Missing or invalid barcodes limit visibility for branded products. For your own products without GTINs, we make sure brand and MPN are set correctly and that the identifier settings in the feed reflect that.

Categories and product types

Google's product category tells Google what the item is. Your own product type, drawn from Shopify, describes how you organise the catalogue and is useful for grouping in campaigns. We fill both consistently, so campaign product groups follow a structure that makes sense.

Variants, apparel attributes and images

Each Shopify variant becomes its own feed item, linked by an item group ID. Apparel and footwear need colour, size, gender and age group to show properly in many countries. Images should be clean product shots without promotional text or watermarks, which can trigger disapprovals.

Custom labels

Custom labels are five optional fields (custom_label_0 to custom_label_4) that you define. Google does not use them for matching; they exist so you can group and bid on products. We typically use them for margin band, bestseller status, price band, season and clearance.

Fixing disapprovals and account warnings

Merchant Center diagnostics list every product with an issue and the reason. Some issues affect single items. Others, such as misrepresentation, can suspend the whole account.

IssueTypical cause on ShopifyFix
Price mismatchCurrency conversion, sale apps or cached pagesMatch feed and storefront prices, enable automatic item updates
Availability mismatchStock not syncing, or sold-out products still in the feedFix inventory sync and out-of-stock handling
Missing or invalid GTINBlank or made-up barcodesAdd real barcodes or set identifiers correctly
Image issuesPromotional text, watermarks, placeholdersReplace with clean product images
Landing page not workingDeleted products, redirects, password pagesUpdate links and restore or exclude products
MisrepresentationMissing policies, contact details or unclear business informationAdd policies, contact page and consistent business details

Structured data on your product pages helps here too. Google reads price and availability from the page, and automatic item updates rely on it to correct small mismatches. Stock problems often come back if the underlying process is manual; where they do, automated stock level and out-of-stock handling keeps the feed honest without anyone checking it by hand.

05

Free listings across Google

Products in Merchant Center can also appear without cost in free listings, on the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces. They will not replace paid campaigns, but they add clicks at no media cost and use the same feed. We make sure free listings are switched on, that product quality issues are not holding them back, and that the traffic is tracked separately in GA4 so you can see what it contributes.

06

Campaign structure and product grouping

Standard Shopping gives you control that Performance Max does not: you can see search terms, add negative keywords and set bids by product group. We use that control to put budget where margins and demand are strongest.

  • Product groups split by custom label, product type, brand or item ID, so bestsellers and high-margin lines get their own bids.
  • Campaign priorities (low, medium, high) to route generic and specific searches to different bids when several Shopping campaigns share products.
  • Negative keywords from the search terms report, removing queries for products you do not sell or searches that never convert.
  • Separate campaigns for clearance, new products or seasonal lines, so they do not compete with core products for budget.

For large apparel catalogues with thousands of variants, this grouping is most of the work. For a small furniture catalogue with a high order value, fewer groups with more budget each tend to learn faster.

07

Bidding by margin, not just revenue

A Shopping campaign that reports a good return can still lose money if its sales come from low-margin products. Here is an illustrative example. Two products each sell for $100. One has a 60% margin before ad spend, the other 25%. At a 4x ROAS, each sale costs $25 in ads. The first product keeps $35 of contribution; the second breaks even. These figures are illustrative, but the pattern is common.

We add margin bands as custom labels, then set separate targets or bids for each band. High-margin products can bid more aggressively; low-margin ones need a higher return or less exposure.

08

Where Performance Max fits

Performance Max also uses your Merchant Center feed and can serve Shopping ads alongside other formats. Many accounts run both, with Standard Shopping kept for products or searches that need tighter control. How we set up asset groups, listing groups and guardrails is covered on our Performance Max page. For category and brand queries a text ad handles better, see our search ad campaigns for Shopify.

09

Landing pages Google can crawl and shoppers can use

Every Shopping click lands on a product page, usually on mobile. Slow product pages lose shoppers who already chose to click, and Google needs to crawl those pages to check prices and availability. If the audit shows product pages loading slowly, we flag it and point you to our Shopify speed and Core Web Vitals work.

10

How a Shopping engagement runs

1. Feed and account audit

We review Merchant Center diagnostics, account warnings, feed attributes, the Google & YouTube app or feed app settings, campaign structure, search terms and product-level results. You get the findings and baseline numbers in writing, including approved product count and spend by product group. The audit is free.

2. Scope and priorities

We rank feed fixes, disapprovals and campaign changes by impact and agree the scope and timeline before any change.

3. Build and review

Feed changes are prepared in supplemental feeds or feed rules and checked in Merchant Center before they apply to live products. New campaigns are built paused. Any changes to product page structured data happen on a duplicated theme with a preview link. You approve everything first.

4. Launch and monitor

Approved changes go live. We monitor diagnostics weekly, fix new disapprovals, review search terms and adjust bids. You get a private client portal, a monthly report and a monthly call to decide next steps.

11

Pricing and who this suits

Merchant Center setup and feed management are included when we manage your Google Ads under a monthly retainer, with ad spend paid directly to Google. If you only need Merchant Center set up or repaired, it is available as a fixed-fee project. See how our ads services are priced, or ask for a fixed-fee Merchant Center quote.

This service suits Shopify stores with physical products and a catalogue big enough for feed quality to matter, stores with disapprovals or a suspended Merchant Center account, and brands that want Shopping bids to reflect margins. The full Google account, including tracking and budget pacing, is covered by our Google Ads account management.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Most stores connect through the Google & YouTube app in Shopify, which syncs products, prices and stock and verifies your domain. Complex catalogues may need a feed app or supplemental feeds for more control. We set up whichever fits your catalogue.

The most common reasons are price or availability mismatches, missing GTINs, promotional images and missing store policies. Merchant Center diagnostics show the reason for each product, and we fix the cause, not just the individual item.

You need them for products that have a manufacturer-assigned barcode, such as branded goods you resell. If you make your own products and have no GTINs, the feed needs to state that correctly, with brand and MPN filled in.

Yes, if you already have a Merchant Center feed. They use the same feed, cost nothing in media and add incremental clicks. We track them separately so you can see their contribution.

Many stores run both with clear roles. Standard Shopping gives search term visibility and tighter control; Performance Max reaches more surfaces. We decide the split from your feed quality, conversion volume and goals.

We can diagnose the cause, fix the site and feed issues behind it and prepare the request for review. Google makes the final decision, so no outcome can be promised, but suspensions often trace back to fixable issues such as missing policies or mismatched data.

Yes, it is included when we manage your Google ads. It is also available on its own as a fixed-fee project.
