Shopify Agency for Footwear Brands: Sizing, Feeds and Fit That Sell Shoes

A shoe is bought on a promise that it will fit. Every product page, ad and email on a shoe store either builds that confidence or erodes it, and the cost of getting it wrong shows up as exchanges, returns and a customer who never comes back. We work as a Shopify agency for footwear brands that want more of the right orders: shoppers who find the model they searched for, pick the right size first time and keep the pair.

We cover SEO, store development, Google and Meta ads, conversion work, email and operations automation for shoe brands and multi-brand shoe retailers on Shopify and Shopify Plus. This page explains what that looks like for footwear specifically. To compare how we approach other verticals, see our guide to Shopify work by industry.

01

Why shoe stores need a different playbook

A shoe catalogue behaves differently from a clothing catalogue, because sizing is more granular and less forgiving.

  • The size run is the product. One model in one colourway can carry whole and half sizes, sometimes in two or three widths. A single trainer can easily become dozens of variants, and every one of them has its own stock level.
  • Sizes do not translate cleanly. US, UK, EU and centimetre systems use different scales, and men's and women's US sizes are offset. A shopper who knows they are "a 42" still has to trust your chart.
  • Fit varies by last, not just by size. Two models from the same brand can fit differently. Shoppers look for "runs small" or "true to size" signals before they commit.
  • Broken size runs happen fast. Popular sizes sell out first, leaving a product page that looks in stock but cannot serve most visitors.
  • Athletic and casual ranges are bought differently. Running and training shoes are researched on specs such as drop, cushioning and intended surface. Casual shoes, boots and sandals are bought on style, season and occasion.

Fit and returns sit at the centre of all six services below. If you also sell clothing, our page for Shopify apparel brands covers garment size matrices and fit guides, which work differently from shoe sizing.

02

SEO for footwear catalogues

Shoe searches are specific. People search by model name, by type ("chelsea boots", "trail running shoes"), by attribute ("wide fit trainers", "vegan leather loafers") and by use ("shoes for standing all day"). Our Shopify SEO retainer builds the store around those patterns rather than around your internal range names.

What that involves for a footwear store:

  • Collections that match search demand. Type, activity and attribute collections, including width-led pages such as wide fit, get their own copy, headings and internal links. We decide which filtered views deserve an indexable collection and which stay as filters.
  • Size filter URLs kept out of the index. Filtering by size 7, 7.5 and 8 creates thousands of near-identical URLs. We check canonicals, robots.txt.liquid rules and internal links so crawl budget goes to pages that can rank.
  • Model and colourway pages that keep their value. When a colourway sells out or a model is discontinued, we plan whether the URL stays live with alternatives, or redirects through Shopify URL redirects to the successor model, so earned rankings are not thrown away.
  • Product structured data with size variants. Product markup in the theme's Liquid should reflect offers, availability and reviews accurately, including when only some sizes are in stock.
03

Store development for size, width and fit

Many shoe store problems trace back to how the catalogue was built. Our Shopify store development team sets up the data model before designing the page.

A variant structure that holds up

We decide how size, width and colour are modelled. Often colourways work better as separate products linked by a shared metafield, so each colourway gets its own images, URL and search visibility, while size and width stay as variant options. For multi-brand retailers we standardise option names so "Size", "US Size" and "Men's size" do not end up as three different filters.

Size conversion and fit data in metaobjects

Size charts belong in structured data, not in pasted images. We store conversion tables per brand or per last as metaobjects and link them to products, so a chart updates once and appears everywhere it is used. Fit notes such as "narrow in the toe box, consider half a size up" live in product metafields and render inside Online Store 2.0 sections.

A size picker that shows availability

The size selector should show which sizes and widths are available, let a shopper switch sizing system, and offer a back-in-stock sign-up on sold-out sizes instead of a dead button. We build it as theme sections and blocks your team manages in the Shopify Admin.

04

Google Shopping and Meta ads for shoes

Shoe shoppers compare models and prices visually, so product feeds carry most of the paid search load. Our paid media management for Shopify runs Google and Meta together, with budget following margin rather than clicks.

Feeds with every size as a variant

Google treats shoes as apparel, which means attributes such as colour, size, gender and age group matter, and each size must sit in the same item group as its siblings. Our Shopping campaign and feed management checks that size values, size system and availability come through from Shopify correctly, and that titles lead with brand, model and type, the words shoppers actually type.

Stop paying for clicks on broken size runs

A model with only its outlier sizes left will still attract clicks, then fail to convert. We use custom labels to flag how complete each product's size run is, and lower or pause bids on products that can no longer serve most shoppers.

Meta creative and catalogue retargeting

On Meta, footwear sells through on-foot video, detail shots and styling. Dynamic catalogue ads retarget viewers with the exact model and colourway they looked at. We exclude recent purchasers of a model so you are not paying to show someone the shoe they already own.

05

Conversion work that reduces wrong-size orders

For shoe stores, a sale that comes back as a return is not a win. Our Shopify conversion rate optimisation service measures kept revenue, not just conversion rate.

Typical footwear CRO work includes:

  • fit guidance next to the size picker, drawn from review data and return reasons
  • clear exchange and returns terms at the point of choosing a size
  • on-foot imagery, sole and heel detail, and a side profile for every colourway
  • a width toggle that is visible without opening a dropdown
  • surfacing a similar in-stock model when the shopper's size is gone

Much of this sits on the product page, which is why our product page optimisation for shoe listings is often the first CRO project. Where traffic allows, we validate changes with controlled A/B tests on your Shopify theme, for example testing the size guide as an inline panel against a modal, with returns rate tracked as a guardrail metric.

06

Email and SMS built around size and wear

A saved shoe size is one of the most useful fields in your customer data. Our lifecycle email service for shoe brands builds flows that use it.

  • Back-in-stock by size. Alerts fire only when the shopper's size and width return, not when any size comes back.
  • Fit check after delivery. A short email asks how the pair fits. The answers feed fit notes and flag exchange requests before they become returns.
  • Size-aware campaigns. Launch and restock emails show only models available in the recipient's size.
  • Replacement timing for athletic ranges. Running and training shoes wear out with use. We time a replacement reminder to the typical wear cycle for that category, without making performance claims.
07

Automation for exchanges and size-level stock

Size swaps create more admin than straight returns. Our Shopify store automation work removes the manual steps.

  • Shopify Flow tags exchange orders and routes them to the right fulfilment queue.
  • Low-stock alerts fire per size and width, so reorders cover the sizes that sell, not just total model stock.
  • Products are hidden from collections, or moved down the sort order, once key sizes are gone.
  • Return reasons are captured consistently, so "too small" and "too narrow" can be reported by model.

How an engagement with a shoe brand starts

We follow our four-step delivery process, shaped for footwear.

  1. Audit and baseline. We crawl the store, review Search Console for size and filter URL bloat, speed test product pages with heavy image galleries, and compare your collections with competing shoe stores. You receive the audit document and baseline numbers in writing, including return and exchange data if you share it.
  2. Strategy and scope. Findings are ranked by impact. For many shoe brands the first priorities are feed accuracy by size and the product page size picker, but the order depends on your store.
  3. Build and fix. Size pickers, fit metafields and collection changes are built on a duplicated theme. You check every change on a preview link, and nothing reaches the live store without your sign-off.
  4. Launch and track. Approved work goes live. Ongoing services include a private client portal, monthly reporting and a monthly call to agree what comes next.

Pricing depends on the store. SEO, ads, CRO and email run as monthly retainers, ad spend is paid directly to the platforms, and development is a fixed project fee agreed after a discovery call. See our pricing model for how quotes are scoped.

Who we work with in footwear

  • direct-to-consumer sneaker and trainer brands with frequent colourway drops
  • running, trail and training shoe brands with spec-led ranges
  • boot and leather shoe makers with widths and resoleable models
  • multi-brand shoe retailers that need consistent sizing data across suppliers
  • kids' shoe stores where sizing changes every few months
  • Shopify Plus footwear brands selling in several Shopify Markets with regional size systems

If your range is more about seasonal trend drops than fit, our page on Shopify fashion brands will be closer. Stores selling team equipment and sport-specific gear should see our work with Shopify sports brands.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Use size and width as variant options and treat each colourway as its own product in most cases. Linking colourways with a shared metafield keeps separate URLs and images for search, while the size picker stays simple. Very large ranges may need a different approach, which we decide during the audit.

We can reduce avoidable wrong-size orders, a common source of footwear returns. The levers are fit notes, better size conversion, review fit data near the picker, and a post-delivery fit check email. We measure exchange and return rates by model so you can see the effect.

They can if every size combination becomes an indexable URL. We keep size and colour filters crawlable only where they match real search demand, and consolidate the rest with canonicals and robots.txt.liquid rules.

Missing size, gender, age group or colour attributes are frequent causes for footwear, as are variants not grouped under one item group. We check how Shopify passes these values into Merchant Center and correct them at the source or through supplemental feeds.

There is no fixed rate card. SEO, ads, CRO and email are monthly retainers scoped to your catalogue size and starting point, and store builds are fixed fees after a discovery call. The first step, the audit, is free.

Yes. Multi-brand retailers usually need consistent size data across suppliers, while own-brand labels usually need more fit content and launch marketing.

Feed and product page fixes can show in paid performance within weeks of going live. SEO changes on collections and product pages typically take a few months to settle, depending on catalogue size and how much needs to change.
