Shopify SEO Agency for Italy: Italian-Language Search and EU Growth
Italian shoppers search in Italian, compare prices in euros that already include IVA, and can tell within a sentence when a product page was machine translated. We act as the Shopify SEO agency Italy-facing brands bring in when that gap is costing them rankings on Google.it: keyword research and copy in Italian, a Shopify Markets set-up that keeps Italian and other EU versions from competing, and product pages built around how Italians buy. We work remotely for two kinds of store: international brands entering the Italian market, and Italian brands using Shopify to sell at home and across Europe on the strength of Made in Italy. This page sits in our Shopify SEO by country section.
Every engagement begins with a free audit, and the findings come to you in writing before you decide anything.
Why Italian search needs its own plan
Translation is not keyword research
Italian search terms are rarely the literal translation of English ones. Shoppers may use an English loanword for one product and an Italian term for the next, and the choice varies by category. Gendered and plural forms change the term people type, and regional words appear in food, homeware and clothing searches. A translated English keyword list misses much of this. We start from Italian search data, group terms by intent, and assign each group to one collection or product page.
Tone matters too. Italian brands choose between the informal "tu" and the formal "Lei" when addressing shoppers, and the choice should be consistent across product pages, emails and checkout.
Prices, IVA and payment habits
Consumer prices in Italy are shown in euros including IVA, and shoppers compare the final price. Product pages, structured data and Google Merchant Center feeds should all carry the same price. PayPal is a familiar choice for many Italian buyers and Satispay has a following, so showing the payment options you accept near the price helps organic visitors commit. Confirm price display obligations with your own adviser; we handle how the information appears on the page.
Saldi and the Italian sales calendar
Italy has regulated seasonal sales periods, the saldi, with start dates set at regional level. Black Friday has become a peak as well. For SEO, this means evergreen sale and outlet collections on permanent URLs, updated before each period, rather than a new page for every campaign. Content about new collections should be published and indexed ahead of the saldi so it is ready when attention shifts.
Made in Italy as a search asset
For Italian brands, provenance is part of what people search for, both in Italy and abroad. Terms linked to materials, regions of production and craftsmanship bring qualified traffic when product pages describe them in specific, verifiable language. We use metafields and metaobjects to hold details such as material, origin and care, so every product page carries them consistently and they can feed structured data.
Delivery and returns
Shoppers want to know delivery times, including to Sicily, Sardinia and smaller islands, and how returns work. A clear shipping and returns page, plus short delivery notes on product pages, answers these questions and gives Google useful content to index.
GDPR and cookie consent
Email and SMS sign-ups from organic traffic need consent that meets GDPR, and your cookie banner affects which visits GA4 records. We set up consent-aware tracking and sign-up forms within the agreed scope. We do not give legal advice, so check your obligations with your own adviser.
What the Italian SEO work covers
All of this is a market-specific version of our main Shopify SEO retainer.
Shopify Markets, hreflang and EU expansion
Many stores selling in Italy also sell in Germany, France, Spain and other EU countries from the same Shopify Admin. We set up or review language and market folders, hreflang for it-IT and each other locale, an x-default, and self-referencing canonical tags on every version. Italian-speaking shoppers in Switzerland are a separate market with a different currency, so they need their own it-CH set-up if you sell there. The United Kingdom is also separate from the EU market, with its own currency and consent rules; our UK Shopify SEO page covers that market. For the crawl and indexation side, see our technical Shopify SEO work.
Italian on-page optimisation
Titles, meta descriptions, H1s, alt text and URL handles are written in Italian for the Italian version, based on the Italian keyword map. We also check that collection filters, product variants and translated handles do not create duplicate URLs across markets. Our Shopify on-page SEO service explains the page-level method.
Italian copy, not machine translation
Scope includes keyword research and copy in Italian, written or reviewed by native speakers. That covers collection introductions, product descriptions, size and material guides, saldi and Black Friday landing copy, and articles that answer pre-purchase questions. The work runs through our SEO copywriting for Shopify stores, briefed from the keyword map so each page has one clear job.
Links from Italian publications
Links from Italian-language magazines, trade press and regional media send stronger local signals for Google.it than links from unrelated international sites. Stories about craft, origin, sustainability or a new collection give Italian editors a reason to feature the brand. The approach is set out on our Shopify link building page.
From problem to measurable result
| Problem | Cause | Fix | Metric |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italian pages indexed but barely ranking | Copy translated from English, Italian search terms missing | Italian keyword map, rewritten titles and collection copy reviewed by native speakers | Google.it impressions and clicks for the Italian folder |
| Italian and other EU versions compete for the same queries | Missing hreflang, wrong x-default, canonicals pointing across languages | Correct hreflang for it-IT and other locales, self-referencing canonicals | Right locale URL shown per country in Search Console |
| Sale traffic disappears after each saldi period | Temporary campaign URLs deleted after the sale | Permanent sale and outlet collections, redirects from old URLs | Year-on-year organic sessions to sale collections |
| Made in Italy products look like any import | Origin and material details missing or inconsistent | Metafields for origin, material and care, shown on every product | Organic clicks for material and origin queries |
| Visitors leave before adding to cart | Unclear euro price with IVA, payment options and delivery times | Price, payment and delivery messaging on product templates | Add-to-cart rate from organic sessions in GA4 |
| Organic traffic looks lower than it is | Cookie consent not connected to GA4 correctly | Consent-aware tagging reviewed and tested | Consistency between Search Console clicks and GA4 sessions |
How we deliver the work
The work is delivered remotely. We have no office or staff in Italy, and we do not claim local results. Everything happens through access to your Shopify Admin, theme, Search Console and GA4.
- Audit and baseline. We crawl every language version, pull Google.it data from Search Console, test speed on the templates Italian shoppers use most, and compare your Italian visibility with the competitors who hold the results you want. Our Shopify SEO audit page lists what is checked. You get the document and the baseline numbers in writing, typically within one to two weeks depending on catalogue size.
- Strategy and scope. The plan ranks work by impact: hreflang and duplicate issues first where they exist, then Italian copy for the collections with most demand, timed ahead of the next saldi or Black Friday. Scope and timeline are fixed before work starts.
- Build and fix. Changes go onto a duplicated theme or staging environment. You, or your Italian-speaking team members, review the Italian pages on a preview link, and nothing goes live without your approval.
- Launch and track. Approved changes are published. Retainer clients get a private portal, a monthly report with Italian results separated from other markets, and a monthly call to set priorities.
SEO is billed as a monthly retainer scoped to catalogue size and the store's starting condition, and each extra language adds pages to that scope. There is no public rate card; the pricing page explains how quotes are built. If you want to see the numbers for your store, request a free Italian SEO audit.
Who this works for
- International brands launching an Italian version of their Shopify store and wanting it to rank, not just exist.
- Italian brands on Shopify selling at home and into other EU countries from one store.
- Made in Italy labels selling to Gulf markets too; the Arabic side of that is covered on our UAE Shopify SEO page and our page on Shopify SEO in Saudi Arabia.
- Shopify Plus merchants running expansion stores per country who need consistent SEO across them; see our Shopify Plus SEO service.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, Italian keyword research and copy are part of the scope when your store needs them. Italian copy is written or reviewed by native speakers, and machine translation is never published as finished content.
For most brands a language subfolder managed through Shopify Markets is the practical choice, because it keeps authority on one domain. A separate .it store can make sense when the Italian catalogue, pricing or operations are clearly different.
Yes. With correct hreflang, a separate language version for each market and copy written for each audience, one store can rank in several countries. Without that set-up, Google often shows one version everywhere.
The sales periods set when demand for discounted collections rises. We keep sale collections on permanent URLs and update them before each period so they keep their history and links, instead of building a new page every time.
Technical fixes can show in Search Console within weeks of Google recrawling your pages. Italian content usually needs several months to build rankings, depending on how competitive your category is on Google.it. No honest agency can guarantee positions.
It is a monthly retainer quoted after the free audit, based on catalogue size, starting condition and the number of languages. You see the findings before you agree to anything.
