Shopify Post Purchase Emails That Turn First Orders Into Second Orders

The first order is where most Shopify stores stop paying attention, and it is where the most valuable part of the customer relationship starts. Shopify post purchase emails decide whether a new buyer feels looked after, uses the product well, leaves a review, and comes back. Done well, they shorten the time to the second order without leaning on discounts.

We plan, write and build post-purchase journeys for Shopify and Shopify Plus stores in Klaviyo and Omnisend: order and shipping communication, product onboarding, review requests, cross-sell and replenishment timed to each product, and loyalty or referral prompts. It is one of the lifecycle stages we manage within our Shopify email marketing service.

01

What post-purchase email covers

Post-purchase email is every message a customer receives between placing an order and deciding whether to buy again. It includes transactional updates such as order and shipping confirmations, and marketing messages such as product guidance, review requests and recommendations for what to buy next. The aim is a confident, satisfied customer who places a second order sooner.

02

Why the gap between first and second order matters

For many stores, a large share of first-time buyers never order again, and the ones who do usually return within a fairly predictable window. That window is where post-purchase email earns its keep. A customer who received the product on time, understood how to use it and saw a relevant next step is far more likely to come back than one who heard nothing except a promotional blast a week later.

Common gaps we find when we audit post-purchase flows:

  • Only Shopify's default order confirmation, and nothing after it
  • Review requests sent a fixed number of days after the order, often before the parcel has arrived
  • Cross-sell emails recommending the product the customer just bought
  • Replenishment reminders on one fixed delay for every product in the catalogue
  • First-time and repeat buyers receiving identical messages
  • Order notifications from Shopify and a second set from the email platform, both sending

Order and shipping updates

Order confirmation and shipping emails are among the most opened messages you send, yet many stores leave them on Shopify's default template. We restyle Shopify's own notifications in Shopify Admin to match your brand, add delivery expectations and support details, and decide which messages Shopify sends and which your email platform sends, so customers never receive two versions of the same update. Clear shipping communication also reduces "where is my order" tickets.

Onboarding and product education

What to send depends on what was bought. A skincare buyer needs a routine and how long to wait for results. A furniture buyer needs assembly and care guidance. An apparel buyer may need fit, washing and styling help. We branch the onboarding sequence by collection or product type, so each customer gets the guidance that matches their order, and first-time customers get a short introduction to the brand that repeat buyers skip.

Review requests

Review requests work best when timed from delivery and product use, not from the order date. A candle can be reviewed within days of arrival. A supplement or skincare product needs a few weeks of use. We connect your review app to the flow, ask for photos where they help the next buyer, and send every customer the same request rather than filtering out likely unhappy ones, since review gating breaks the rules of many review platforms and hides problems you should know about.

Cross-sell and next-product recommendations

The best cross-sell is the product that makes the first purchase better: the case for the phone accessory, the refill for the starter kit, the matching piece from the same collection. We build recommendation rules from your catalogue and order data, exclude items already bought, and time the cross-sell after the customer has had a chance to use the first product.

Replenishment timing by product

Consumable products need reorder reminders timed to how long they last. We record a usage interval per product or collection, often in product metafields or your platform's catalogue data, and trigger the reminder shortly before it is likely to run out. On Klaviyo, predicted next order dates can refine this once there is enough order history. On Omnisend, we build the timing into the post-purchase workflow using order and product conditions.

The second-purchase push

For first-time buyers who have not ordered again after the usual window, we send a dedicated second-order sequence: best sellers related to their first purchase, reviews from similar customers, and an incentive only if testing shows it is worth the margin. This is still part of the active relationship. Once a customer has gone well past your normal repurchase cycle, they move into win-back campaigns for lapsed customers, which use different segments and angles.

Loyalty and referral prompts

If you run a loyalty or referral programme, post-purchase is where it should appear, after a positive signal such as a review submitted or a second order placed. We show points balances, tier progress or a personal referral link inside the flow, pulled from your loyalty app's integration where it supports that.

04

First-time buyers and repeat customers take different paths

A first-time buyer needs reassurance, education and a clear reason to come back. A fifth-time buyer does not need the brand story again, and often values early access or recognition more than content. We split the post-purchase flow on order count, and for high-value customers we suppress generic cross-sells in favour of VIP messages.

05

How the product changes the plan

Post-purchase timing is driven by the catalogue:

  • Consumables such as coffee, pet food, supplements or skincare: replenishment is the main event, and subscription offers may fit
  • Apparel and footwear: fit and care guidance, then collection-based cross-sell and new-season drops
  • Furniture and home: long delivery windows, assembly help, and a much longer gap before cross-sell
  • Electronics: setup guides, accessories and warranty registration
06

The data that makes it work

Post-purchase flows depend on accurate order, product and customer data. Tags for VIP tiers, subscription status or wholesale customers, and triggers from review or survey tools, often come from Shopify Flow or app automations. Our customer automation service keeps that tagging and data sync reliable so your post-purchase branches send to the right people.

07

Post-purchase email and the rest of the funnel

Some of the best post-purchase revenue happens before the first email is sent, through one-click upsells after checkout and offers on the thank-you page. Those belong to our funnel optimisation work, which looks at the full path from first visit through to repeat order. Earlier in the journey, customers recovered by cart and checkout recovery emails land in this post-purchase flow as soon as they buy.

How we build your post-purchase journey

1. Post-purchase audit

We review every message a customer receives after ordering, from Shopify notifications to marketing flows, map the timing against real delivery times, check for duplicate sends, and pull your baseline second purchase rate and average days to second order. You receive the audit and baseline numbers in writing.

2. Journey plan and scope

We define branches by product type and customer type, set timing for reviews, cross-sell and replenishment, and agree which messages Shopify sends and which the email platform sends. The scope is fixed before we build.

3. Build and approve

Emails are written and designed, then built in draft with test orders pushed through each branch. Changes to Shopify notification templates are previewed before saving. You approve every message before it goes live.

4. Launch and track

Approved flows go live and results are tracked in your client portal, with a monthly report and a monthly call to decide what to refine next.

The post-purchase journey is one part of a connected lifecycle map. For how it hands off to and from welcome, recovery and win-back flows, see our email automation architecture service.

09

What post-purchase work influences

We do not promise results, because they depend on your product, price point and traffic. The work is designed to move:

  • Second purchase rate among first-time buyers
  • Average days between first and second order
  • Review volume and share of reviews with photos
  • Revenue per recipient from cross-sell and replenishment messages
  • Support tickets about order status and delivery
  • Unsubscribe rate from post-purchase messages

Platforms

We build post-purchase journeys in Klaviyo and Omnisend. On Omnisend, order and shipping workflows can combine email, SMS and push in one sequence, which suits stores that want shipping updates by text. Our Omnisend management service covers that setup in detail.

11

Pricing

Post-purchase flows are built and managed within our email marketing retainer, which is scoped to your list size and the number of flows and campaigns you need. The free audit comes first so the scope reflects your store. See our pricing page for how retainers are structured, or ask for a free post-purchase flow review.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

At minimum: an order confirmation, shipping and delivery updates, a product onboarding or care email, and a review request. Most stores also benefit from a cross-sell or replenishment message and a second-order sequence for first-time buyers.

After the customer has received and used the product, not a fixed number of days after the order. For quick-use products that can be days after delivery. For skincare or supplements it is usually a few weeks.

Either can work, but only one should send each message. Many stores keep Shopify's order and shipping notifications, restyled to match the brand, and use the email platform for education, reviews and cross-sell. We decide per store and switch off duplicates.

By product. We set a usage interval for each consumable product or collection and trigger the reminder shortly before it is likely to run out. Where there is enough order history, predicted next order dates can refine the timing.

Usually not in the first weeks. Education, reviews and relevant recommendations do most of the work. A second-order incentive can be tested for first-time buyers who have not returned within the expected window.

Post-purchase covers the active relationship, from the order through to the expected second purchase. Win-back starts once a customer has gone well past their normal repurchase window and needs reactivating.
