Shopify Meta Ads Management: One System for Facebook and Instagram

Shopify Meta ads work when three things are in order: the data Meta receives from your store, the way your account is structured, and a steady supply of tested creative. Plenty of accounts are strong on one of these and weak on the other two. We manage the whole Meta system for Shopify and Shopify Plus brands, from pixel and Conversions API setup to catalog, campaign structure, testing and budget split between Facebook and Instagram.

This page covers the account-level work. Placement-specific creative and audiences live on our pages for Facebook and Instagram, and the whole programme sits inside our paid media management for Shopify brands, where Meta is planned against Google and email rather than on its own.

01

What Meta ads management means for a Shopify store

Meta ads management is the ongoing setup, running and measurement of paid campaigns across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network from one Meta ad account. For a Shopify store it includes the tracking link between Shopify and Meta, the product catalog Meta uses for shopping ads, the campaign structure, the creative testing process and the reporting that ties spend back to orders and margin.

Meta's delivery system does most of the targeting now. What it cannot do is fix bad purchase data, choose which products to push, or decide what a first order is worth to you. Those decisions are the job.

02

Why Meta performance breaks down on Shopify

When Meta results slide, the cause is rarely one ad. It is usually one of these:

  • Weak or duplicated signal. Pixel events fire twice, server events are not deduplicated, or the Conversions API is not sending events at all, so Meta optimises on partial data.
  • A catalog out of step with the store. Prices, stock or variants in the Meta catalog differ from Shopify, which triggers rejected products and ads for items you cannot ship.
  • Too many small campaigns. Budget spread across a dozen ad sets means none of them exit learning.
  • Testing without a method. New ads go live at random, nobody records what each test was meant to prove, and winners are not scaled on purpose.
  • Reporting only in Ads Manager. Meta's attributed revenue is taken at face value instead of being checked against Shopify orders and blended efficiency.
03

Tracking and data setup: pixel, Conversions API and catalog

This is the foundation. If it is wrong, every later decision is built on bad numbers.

Business Manager and asset ownership

We check who owns the Business Manager (now called a business portfolio), the ad account, the Facebook Page, the Instagram account, the pixel (dataset) and the catalog. Assets owned by a former freelancer or a personal profile are moved under your business, with user roles set so you keep control if you ever change agency. Domain verification is completed for your Shopify domain.

Pixel and Conversions API through the Facebook & Instagram app

Meta's Facebook & Instagram app for Shopify installs the pixel and can send server-side events through the Conversions API. We set the data sharing level in the app, confirm that browser and server events share event IDs so Meta deduplicates them, and review event match quality for purchase, add to cart and checkout events. Where old hard-coded pixels or a second tracking app are still sending events, we remove them so each event is counted once.

Catalog sync

Your Shopify products sync to a Meta catalog through the same app. We clean up what syncs: variant grouping, product images, titles, availability and prices per market if you use Shopify Markets. We build product sets for bestsellers, new arrivals, high-margin lines and seasonal ranges, which later feed catalog ads and Advantage+ campaigns.

04

Account structure and Advantage+ campaigns

We keep structures simple enough for Meta's delivery system to learn and clear enough for you to read. A typical account has three layers, adjusted to your spend and catalogue.

LayerPurposeTypical setup
ScalingMost of the budget, proven creative, broad deliveryAdvantage+ shopping campaign (Advantage+ sales in newer Ads Manager setups) using the full catalog and top ads
TestingFinding the next winning conceptsSeparate campaign with controlled budget per concept, clear test naming
Retargeting and catalogRecovering product viewers and cart visitorsCatalog ads from product sets, used where Advantage+ does not already cover the audience well

How we run Advantage+ shopping campaigns

Advantage+ shopping campaigns combine prospecting and retargeting into one campaign with little manual targeting. We feed them your best creative, connect the catalog, and define existing customers with Shopify customer lists so reporting can separate new buyers from repeat buyers. Where Meta offers controls that limit spend on existing customers, we set them according to how much you value first orders against repeat orders.

The placement-level creative and audience decisions that sit under this structure are handled on our pages for Facebook ads for Shopify stores and for Instagram placements such as Reels and Stories.

05

Creative testing framework

Creative is the main lever left in Meta advertising. We run testing as a system with a written record, not as a feed of random new ads.

  1. Concepts before variations. We test distinct ideas first: a problem and solution angle, a product demo, a founder story, a comparison, a customer review. Small tweaks come after a concept proves itself.
  2. A hypothesis per test. Each test states what it should prove, the audience, the budget and the metric that decides it.
  3. Decision metrics. Early reads use hook rate and click-through rate. Final calls use cost per purchase and, where possible, new customer cost.
  4. Graduation. Winners move into the scaling campaign. Losers are logged with the reason, so the same idea is not paid for twice.
  5. A creative brief loop. Test results turn into briefs for your designers, creators or our team, with formats sized for each placement.

Meta's own experiment tools can split audiences for a clean ad-level test. When the question is about the page rather than the ad, for example a new product page layout for paid traffic, we run it as a Shopify A/B test on the storefront so the change is measured properly.

06

Attribution settings and reading Meta's numbers

Meta reports conversions inside its chosen click and view windows, and it will usually claim more sales than Shopify can tie to Meta alone. Neither view is the full truth, so we use three.

  • Ads Manager, with the attribution setting chosen deliberately per campaign. For example, view-through conversions can be kept visible for awareness-led video, while scaling decisions lean on click-based results.
  • Shopify and GA4, to check that order counts and revenue move in the same direction as Meta's reports.
  • Blended metrics, such as total revenue divided by total ad spend (MER) and new customer counts, which show whether Meta is adding sales or only claiming them.

Where the account qualifies, Meta's lift studies can measure incremental sales directly. We recommend them before large budget increases.

07

Budget across Facebook and Instagram

We usually start with Advantage+ placements so Meta can shift spend between Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network toward the cheapest conversions. We then read placement breakdowns every month. If a placement drives cheap clicks but poor purchases, or if Audience Network inflates traffic, we exclude or restrict it.

Budget between Meta and Google is set at the channel mix level, based on where each platform finds new customers at an acceptable cost. When Google is part of your mix, we coordinate with your Google Ads account for Shopify so both platforms are not paying to reach the same buyer at the same moment.

Where paid traffic lands matters as much as the ad. For offers and cold audiences, we often recommend dedicated Shopify landing pages for paid traffic rather than sending every click to the homepage.

How a Meta engagement runs

  1. Audit and baseline. We review Business Manager ownership, pixel and Conversions API events, event match quality, catalog health, campaign structure, creative history and the gap between Meta-reported and Shopify revenue. You receive the audit and baseline numbers in writing.
  2. Strategy and scope. We set the account structure, testing plan, budget split and reporting approach, ranked by impact. The scope and retainer are fixed before work starts.
  3. Build and fix. Tracking changes are tested before they replace existing events. New campaigns are built paused and shared for review. Any storefront change, such as a landing page for paid traffic, is built on a duplicated theme with a preview link. Nothing goes live without your sign-off.
  4. Launch and track. Approved campaigns go live on a schedule that avoids resetting learning. You get a client portal with progress tracking, a monthly report and a monthly call to agree the next tests and budget moves.

Who this service is for

  • Shopify brands already spending on Meta whose results have stalled or whose numbers no longer match Shopify.
  • Stores launching on Meta that want tracking and catalog right before spending.
  • Shopify Plus brands with several markets or expansion stores that need one clean account structure and currency-correct catalogs.
  • Teams that produce creative in-house or with creators but need a testing process to decide what runs.

If your product has very low order volume, Meta's purchase-optimised delivery may struggle to learn. In that case we may start with a higher-funnel event or a smaller test budget while data builds.

Pricing

Meta ads management is a monthly retainer plus your ad spend, which is paid directly to Meta. The retainer is scoped after the audit and reflects the number of markets, campaigns and the creative testing volume you need. There is no fixed rate card; our pricing page explains how quotes are built.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Yes, in most cases. Browser tracking misses events because of ad blockers and browser privacy limits, and server-side events through the Conversions API fill part of that gap. The two must be deduplicated so purchases are not counted twice.

Usually both, with different jobs. Advantage+ shopping campaigns carry most of the scaling budget, while a separate testing campaign gives cleaner reads on new creative concepts.

Meta counts conversions within its attribution windows, including some view-through purchases, and other channels may claim the same order. We compare Meta against Shopify orders and blended metrics rather than trusting any single dashboard.

There is no single right figure. Budget should be large enough for campaigns to get meaningful purchase data each week, and it is set from your margins and target cost per new customer, which we work out during the audit.

It depends on spend and audience size. Higher budgets burn through creative faster, so we watch frequency and cost per purchase and keep a pipeline of new concepts ready rather than refreshing on a fixed calendar.

Yes. We start by moving asset ownership to your business where needed, then audit tracking and structure before changing live campaigns, so performance is not disrupted by a rushed rebuild.

Both are part of our ads management retainer model. If you run both channels with us, the retainer is scoped for the combined work and your ad spend is paid to each platform directly.
