Shopify Content Optimization: Refresh, Merge and Prune the Pages You Already Have
On an established store, some of the quickest organic gains come from pages you already have rather than new ones: articles, guides and collection copy that once ranked and are now slipping, or that compete with each other for the same search. Shopify content optimization is how we recover that value. We find decaying and underperforming pages in Search Console, then refresh, expand, merge or remove each one based on evidence, and re-promote the result.
The service is for Shopify and Shopify Plus stores with a back catalogue of content: a blog with dozens of posts, buying guides written a few years ago, or collection descriptions that have not been touched since launch. It sits inside our content marketing service for Shopify brands, alongside strategy and new writing.
What content optimization is
Content optimization is the work of improving pages that already exist instead of publishing new ones. It means spotting content that is losing clicks or never gained traction, working out why, then refreshing, expanding, consolidating or retiring it. On a Shopify store it covers blog articles, pages, and the written copy on collections and products.
It is not template work. Fixing how title tags, headings or alt text are generated across every product or collection template is on-page optimisation at template level. Content optimization changes the substance of individual URLs.
Why content decays on Shopify stores
Pages that ranked well rarely hold their position forever. The usual causes on ecommerce stores:
- Newer competitors. Another store or publisher writes a more complete, more current answer.
- Intent shifts. A query that once showed articles now shows product listings, or the reverse, and your page no longer matches.
- Catalogue changes. Articles link to discontinued or sold-out products, so readers hit dead ends and engagement drops.
- Dated details. A year in the title, old prices or retired product names make the page look stale in results.
- Cannibalisation. Several articles written over the years target the same question, and none of them wins.
- Answer formats. Search results and AI answer features favour pages that state the answer early and clearly. Long intros push that answer down.
How we detect decay in Search Console
We compare page-level and query-level performance across periods, usually the last few months against the same period a year earlier to allow for seasonality, and add GA4 engagement and product click data.
| Signal | What it usually means | Typical action |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks and impressions falling, average position slipping | Stronger competing pages or outdated content | Refresh and expand |
| Position steady, click-through rate falling | Snippet less appealing, or results features taking clicks | Rewrite the SEO title and meta description for that URL, add an early direct answer |
| Two of your URLs swapping for the same query | Cannibalisation | Merge into one page and redirect the other |
| Impressions but almost no clicks for months, no links | Thin or off-intent page | Prune, or fold into a stronger page |
| Query mix moving toward buying terms | Intent shift toward a commercial page | Reposition, or move the topic to collection copy |
| Traffic steady, product clicks falling | Broken or outdated product links | Update product links and embedded product blocks |
The result is a verdict for every content URL: keep, refresh, expand, merge, reposition or prune. The heavier audit of crawl, indexation and templates is a separate deliverable, our Shopify SEO audit, and we recommend it first when problems look sitewide rather than page by page.
What we do to each page
Refresh and expand
We rewrite outdated sections, answer the questions now showing in Search Console for that page, add missing subtopics competitors cover, replace dead product links, update images and alt text, and restate the core answer in the first paragraph. The URL stays the same, so existing links and history are kept.
Merge cannibalising pages
When two or three articles compete, we combine the best of each into one page on the strongest URL. The others are redirected to it with URL redirects in Shopify Admin, and internal links across the store are updated to point at the surviving URL directly instead of relying on the redirect.
Prune thin content
Not every page deserves saving. Old announcement posts, near-empty pages and articles with no search demand and no links get one of three outcomes: improved if the topic is worth it, merged into a related page, or removed with a redirect to the closest relevant page. We do not delete pages that still earn links or traffic without a redirect in place.
Update for intent shifts
If a query now wants a product list, an article cannot win it. We either reposition the article toward the informational angle that still exists, or recommend moving the topic to collection copy or a buying guide handled by our SEO content writers.
Structure for AI answers
Answer engines and AI summaries quote pages that are easy to extract from. We add plain definitions near the top, question-led subheadings with direct answers underneath, comparison tables where they help, FAQ blocks, and clear names for products, materials and brands. Where your theme outputs Article or FAQ structured data, we make sure the refreshed content matches it.
Refresh product and collection copy
Stale collection descriptions and product copy decay too. We refresh the copy on priority URLs as part of this work. When a whole range needs rewriting, that moves to product description writing, which handles catalogue-wide copy and product data.
Re-promote updated pages
A refreshed page benefits from a nudge. We add links to it from newer articles and relevant collections, request indexing through URL Inspection in Search Console, and give your email and social team a short summary they can reuse.

How a content optimization engagement runs
- Decay audit and baseline. We export page and query data from Search Console, pull engagement and product click data from GA4, review which articles link to live products, and check for competing URLs. You receive the verdict list and baseline figures for every URL in writing.
- Prioritise and scope. Pages are ranked by recoverable traffic, commercial value and effort. We agree how many URLs are refreshed, merged or pruned per month as a fixed scope.
- Rewrite and stage. Refreshed copy is prepared as drafts, and article updates are staged as hidden duplicates or shared documents you can preview. Redirects are listed for approval before any are created. Nothing changes on the live store until you sign off.
- Publish and measure. Approved changes go live, redirects are added, and each URL is tracked against its baseline. You see progress in a private client portal, with a monthly report and a monthly call to choose the next batch.
The general model is on our process page.
What the work can move
We track outcomes the work can influence, not promised numbers:
- Organic clicks and impressions for each optimised URL against its baseline
- Click-through rate from search results
- Number of queries where two of your URLs compete
- Share of indexed content URLs that earn clicks
- Clicks from content to collection and product pages
- Assisted conversions from content sessions in GA4
Pricing
Content optimization is scoped as a fixed-scope clean-up project or a monthly retainer after the free audit. The quote depends on how many URLs you have, how many need rewriting rather than light edits, and how much redirect and internal link work is involved. See our pricing overview for how scoping works.
When this is the right service
Choose optimisation when your store has published content for a year or more and organic clicks have flattened or fallen, when you suspect several pages target the same topic, or before commissioning more new content. A refresh cycle every year or so keeps the back catalogue working. When the audit shows real gaps rather than decay, content strategy decides what to create, and new articles come from our blog writing service.

Frequently asked questions
It is improving content you already have, such as blog articles, guides and collection copy, so it ranks and converts better. The work covers refreshing, expanding, merging and removing pages based on Search Console and GA4 data.
Compare clicks and impressions per page in Search Console against the same period last year. Pages with falling clicks and slipping positions, or steady positions with falling click-through rate, are the usual candidates for a refresh.
Update the old post when it targets the right query and has history or links. Write a new one only when the topic is genuinely different, otherwise the new article will compete with the old one.
Deleting pages with no traffic, no links and no search demand usually does no harm and can help. Pages that still earn links or clicks should be merged or redirected, never simply deleted.
We pick the strongest URL for the topic, merge the useful parts of competing pages into it, redirect the others with URL redirects in Shopify Admin, and update internal links to point at the surviving page.
Refreshed pages often move sooner than new ones because they already have history, but timing varies with competition and how often search engines recrawl your store. We track each URL against its own baseline so the change is visible.
It can. Pages that answer clearly near the top, use question-led headings and state facts plainly are easier for AI answer features to quote. We cannot control whether a specific page is cited.
