Shopify Checkout Optimization: More Carts Turned Into Orders
A shopper who reaches your cart has already chosen what to buy. Losing them now is the most expensive drop-off in your store, because you have paid to bring them this far. Our Shopify checkout optimization service finds out why carts and checkouts are abandoned and removes the friction, from the cart drawer through to the payment step.
This page covers one specialist part of our conversion rate optimization service for Shopify. It is for Shopify and Shopify Plus stores that see healthy add-to-cart numbers but too few completed orders, or that want to make better use of Shop Pay, express wallets and checkout customization.
What checkout optimization means on Shopify
Checkout optimization is the work of increasing the share of carts that become paid orders. On Shopify it covers two areas with different rules. The cart page or cart drawer lives in your theme, so almost anything can be changed. The checkout itself is hosted by Shopify, so improvements come from checkout settings, payment and shipping configuration, the checkout editor, apps and, on Shopify Plus, checkout UI extensions.
Knowing which lever sits where is half the job. Many stores try to fix a checkout problem that actually starts in the cart, or the other way round.
Why shoppers abandon cart and checkout
Abandonment rarely has one cause. The most common reasons we find on Shopify stores are:
- Unexpected costs. Shipping, duties or taxes appear for the first time late in the process.
- Delivery uncertainty. No delivery date, or a vague range, on a product the buyer needs by a certain day.
- The discount code box. A visible code field sends shoppers off to search for a code, and some never come back.
- Missing payment options. Buyers who expect Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal or a local method do not see it.
- A crowded cart. Upsells, gift wrap prompts and banners push the checkout button out of view.
- Trust gaps. Unclear returns, no contact details, or a checkout that looks unlike the rest of the store.
- Slow or broken cart updates. Quantity changes that lag, or app scripts that conflict with the cart drawer.
Some abandonment is normal. Many people use the cart as a wishlist or to check the total. The aim is to remove the avoidable reasons, then recover as many of the rest as possible.
What we optimize, step by step
Cart page and cart drawer
The cart is fully controlled by your theme, which makes it the easiest place to win. We review whether a drawer or a full cart page suits your buyers, simplify the layout so the checkout button stays visible, make quantity and variant edits quick, and show the order total with shipping expectations. Upsells stay in the cart only if they earn their space, which we test rather than assume.
Shipping cost and delivery clarity
We make costs visible early: free shipping thresholds with a progress bar, a shipping estimate in the cart, and delivery date estimates where your fulfillment can support them. For stores selling internationally with Shopify Markets, we check that local currency, duties and import tax settings match what the buyer sees before checkout.
Shop Pay and express wallets
Accelerated checkout buttons let returning and mobile shoppers skip most of the form. We check which wallets are enabled through Shopify Payments or your gateway, where the buttons appear on product pages, cart and checkout, and whether their placement helps or distracts. Shop Pay often matters most on mobile, because saved details let returning buyers complete an order in a few taps.
Payment methods
Buyers in different markets expect different ways to pay. We review payment methods by market, including local options and buy now, pay later providers where they suit your price points, and look at payment step drop-off by method to find gaps.
Discount field behavior
We look at how codes are used: which are shared publicly, how often the field is used, and whether automatic discounts would serve better. Where you need discount logic Shopify does not offer out of the box, such as tiered or conditional offers, that is built with Shopify Functions by our custom Shopify development team.
Trust signals and policy clarity
Returns policy, delivery commitments, contact options and secure payment cues belong where buyers hesitate, not only in the footer. We also make sure the checkout looks like part of your brand, because a sudden visual change at checkout can feel like leaving the store.
Checkout branding and extensions
Every Shopify plan can set logo, colors and fonts in the checkout editor. Shopify Plus adds deeper branding control and checkout UI extensions inside the checkout steps, for things such as delivery instructions, gift messages, trust content or a well-placed offer. Checkout extensibility replaced checkout.liquid for customizing Shopify checkout, so older customizations need to be reviewed and rebuilt where they still matter.
Our role here is deciding what to change and measuring the effect. Building extensions and wider checkout development is handled by our Shopify Plus development team, working from the plan we agree together.
Checkout funnel analytics
You cannot fix what you cannot see. Before changing anything, we make sure each step of the cart and checkout is measured correctly:
- Shopify Analytics for sessions that added to cart, reached checkout and completed an order.
- GA4 checkout events such as begin_checkout, add_payment_info and purchase, sent through Shopify's customer events so that tracking works with checkout extensibility.
- The abandoned checkouts view in Shopify Admin, to see what was in carts and at which stage buyers stopped.
- Segments by device, market, traffic source, payment method and new versus returning buyers.
This gives a step-by-step picture of where drop-off happens. It also shows whether a problem belongs to checkout at all, or starts earlier on product pages that could convert better or elsewhere in the wider purchase journey.
Common cart and checkout problems we fix
| Problem | Likely cause | What we change | Metric it moves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Many carts, few checkouts started | Shipping cost unknown until checkout, cluttered cart drawer | Shipping estimate and threshold bar in cart, cleaner drawer layout | Cart to checkout rate |
| Drop-off at the shipping step | Delivery options slow, expensive or unclear | Review rates, add delivery estimates, reorder options | Shipping step completion |
| Drop-off at the payment step | Missing wallet or local payment method, trust concerns | Enable and position wallets, add payment methods by market, add trust content | Payment step completion |
| Shoppers leave to hunt for codes | Code field at checkout with no visible offer on the site | Automatic discounts and clear offer messaging in the cart | Checkout completion rate |
| Mobile checkout far weaker than desktop | Express buttons low on the page, slow cart drawer | Wallets higher, lighter cart scripts | Mobile checkout completion |
| International buyers abandon | Surprise duties or wrong currency | Align Shopify Markets pricing, duties and messaging | Checkout completion by market |
Speed matters here too. A cart drawer weighed down by app scripts feels broken on a mid-range phone, and that work links closely with our Shopify speed optimization service.
If several of these sound familiar, book a cart and checkout review and we will rank them by the orders they are likely costing you.
When a cart is still abandoned
No checkout converts everyone. For buyers who leave anyway, recovery comes from well-timed reminders. Our abandoned cart email flows pick up those shoppers through Shopify's own abandoned checkout emails or Klaviyo and Omnisend flows, and checkout research tells those emails which objections to answer.
How a checkout engagement runs
1. Checkout audit and baseline
The free audit starts with a test purchase on mobile and desktop, in each main market. We review cart and checkout settings, shipping rates and payment methods, check that each checkout step is tracked, and pull abandonment by step, device and payment method. You receive the audit document and baseline cart to checkout and checkout completion rates in writing.
2. Checkout plan and scope
Findings become a ranked list of changes, split into cart changes in the theme, checkout settings, and any Plus extension work. We agree scope, timeline and which changes will be tested before anything starts.
3. Build and preview
Cart and theme changes are built on a duplicated theme. Checkout settings and extensions are prepared so you can review them before release. You approve each change from a preview link, and the live checkout is not touched until you sign off.
4. Go live and monitor
Approved changes are released at a quiet trading time and watched closely in the first days, because checkout errors cost orders immediately. Ongoing clients track progress in the client portal, receive a monthly report on checkout metrics, and choose next steps on a monthly call.
Outcomes the work is designed to influence
We do not promise a fixed improvement, because checkout performance depends on your products, markets and traffic mix. The work targets:
- Cart to checkout rate.
- Checkout completion rate, overall and by step.
- Mobile checkout completion.
- Share of orders placed through Shop Pay and express wallets.
- Average order value, where threshold and upsell changes are in scope.
Who this service is for
It is a good fit if your store has a solid add-to-cart rate but a weak finish, if you are moving checkout customizations over to checkout extensibility, if you sell across several markets, or if you run Shopify Plus and want to use checkout UI extensions with a clear plan. Checkout work is available inside a monthly CRO retainer or as a fixed-scope project, quoted after the free audit. The pricing page explains how scope is set.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, within limits. Every plan can brand the checkout with logo, colors and fonts, choose checkout settings, and configure shipping, payments and discounts. Checkout UI extensions inside the checkout steps are a Shopify Plus feature, so the biggest layout changes need Plus.
Cart abandonment means a shopper added products but never started checkout. Checkout abandonment means they started checkout and did not pay. Each has different causes and fixes, so we measure them separately.
It can, when shoppers without a code leave to search for one. Shopify's checkout shows the field whenever codes can be used, so the practical fixes are automatic discounts, showing the current offer clearly in the cart, and controlling which codes circulate publicly.
For many stores it does, especially on mobile, because returning Shop Pay users can check out without typing their details. We check how it is set up and positioned on your store and measure its share of orders before and after changes.
An audit typically takes one to two weeks depending on the number of markets and payment setups. Most cart and settings changes can be staged and released within a few weeks after that, while tested changes need enough orders to read a clear result.
Checkout extensibility replaced checkout.liquid, so those customizations need to be reviewed. We list what each one did, decide which are still worth having, and plan the rebuild with checkout UI extensions, apps or settings.
