International Shopify SEO Agency for Brands Selling in More Than One Country

A Shopify store that ranks well at home does not automatically rank abroad. Each country has its own Google results, its own spelling or language, its own currency and tax display, its own sales calendar and its own rules on email consent. We are an international Shopify SEO agency for brands that already sell in more than one country, or plan to, and want each market to rank on its own terms instead of borrowing a copy of the home store.

This hub explains how Shopify SEO changes by market, how to decide between one store with Shopify Markets and separate expansion stores, and what we plan for each of the eight markets we cover. The core method, from technical fixes to content and links, is set out on our main Shopify SEO service page. Everything here is about what changes when you cross a border.

01

How Shopify SEO changes from one market to the next

The ranking fundamentals stay the same everywhere: crawlable pages, clear targeting, useful content and earned authority. What changes is almost everything the shopper sees and searches for.

FactorWhat changes between marketsWhy it matters for SEO
Language and spellingUS vs British spelling, Canadian French, Arabic, ItalianKeywords, titles and copy must match how locals search, not a translation of your home terms
CurrencyUSD, CAD, GBP, AUD, NZD, AED, SAR, EURPrices in product pages, structured data and feeds must match the market being served
Tax displayTax added at checkout in North America, tax-inclusive prices in many other marketsPrice mismatches between page and feed can limit Shopping visibility
Local Google resultsGoogle.com, Google.co.uk, Google.ca, Google.com.au and othersCompetitors, SERP features and ranking pages differ in each country
SeasonalityBlack Friday, Boxing Day, Click Frenzy, EOFY, saldi, Ramadan, White FridaySeasonal pages need to be live and indexed before each market's own peak
Privacy and email lawCAN-SPAM, CASL, UK GDPR and PECR, GDPR, Spam Act 2003 and othersShapes cookie consent and how organic visitors can be turned into subscribers
Shipping and returnsDistance, duties, courier expectations, returns normsDelivery and return terms influence clicks from snippets and Shopping listings
Payment habitsPay-later options, cards such as mada, Interac, cash on deliveryWhat shoppers expect to see on product pages before they commit

None of these laws or tax rules should be read as advice. We describe them in general terms, and each brand should confirm its own obligations in each country with its adviser.

02

One store or several: Shopify Markets vs expansion stores

This is the biggest structural decision in international Shopify SEO, and it is hard to reverse later.

One store with Shopify Markets

Shopify Markets lets a single store sell to several countries, each with its own currency, language, pricing and domain or subfolder, such as /en-gb/ or /fr-ca/. Shopify adds hreflang tags for the markets and languages you publish. All versions share one product catalogue and one domain's authority, which is a strong advantage for SEO. The risk is thin localisation: several English versions with identical copy, untranslated URL handles, or automatic redirects that stop Google crawling anything but the default market.

Separate expansion stores

Some brands run a separate Shopify store per region, often on Shopify Plus. That suits very different catalogues, local fulfilment, separate legal entities or regional teams that manage their own content. The SEO cost is that each store builds authority separately, and hreflang has to be managed across domains that Shopify does not automatically connect. Our SEO work for Shopify Plus merchants covers multi-store set-ups in detail.

For most growing brands, one store with well-configured Markets is the better starting point. The audit tells us whether your situation is an exception.

03

Common international mistakes on Shopify stores

  • Forced geolocation redirects. Sending every visitor to a market based on IP address can hide your other markets from Google, which mostly crawls from US addresses.
  • Copy-paste English markets. US, UK, Australian and Canadian versions with identical text, currency aside, give Google little reason to rank the right one in each country.
  • Machine translation left unedited. Italian, French or Arabic pages that read like software output rarely match local search terms.
  • Mixed currencies in structured data. A page served in one currency with a different currency in its Product schema or feed confuses both Google and shoppers.
  • Seasonal pages built for one calendar. A Black Friday page does little for a market whose biggest peak is Ramadan or the saldi.

Fixing these is mostly configuration and content work, which our technical Shopify SEO and localisation work handle together.

04

The markets we cover

Every market is served remotely. Each page below explains what is different about ranking a Shopify store in that country.

United States

The largest English-language market, with prices shown before sales tax, results crowded by marketplaces and big-box retailers, and a year shaped by Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the holiday season. Read about our Shopify SEO for US stores, including Merchant Center and the privacy and email rules that apply.

United Kingdom

British spelling and vocabulary, GBP with VAT-inclusive prices, Google.co.uk results, Boxing Day and Black Friday peaks, and consent under UK GDPR and PECR. Shipping to and from the EU is a factor too. See our UK Shopify SEO page.

Canada

Two languages, with en-CA and fr-CA versions for Quebec shoppers, CAD pricing with provincial sales taxes, heavy competition from US stores on Google.ca and strict consent under CASL. Our Shopify SEO plan for Canada covers bilingual set-up and cross-border positioning.

Australia

Australian English, GST-inclusive AUD prices, Google.com.au, and a calendar built around Click Frenzy, EOFY sales and Boxing Day. Pay-later options such as Afterpay and the Spam Act 2003 shape product pages and email. Visit our Australian Shopify SEO page.

New Zealand

Smaller search volumes that put more weight on long-tail and brand searches, GST-inclusive NZD prices and a trans-Tasman set-up that must keep New Zealand and Australian pages distinct. Details are on our New Zealand Shopify SEO page.

United Arab Emirates

English and Arabic storefronts with right-to-left layout, AED pricing with VAT, cash on delivery, Tabby and Tamara, and peaks around Ramadan, Eid, White Friday and the Dubai Shopping Festival. See our UAE Shopify SEO page.

Saudi Arabia

Arabic-first search behaviour, SAR pricing with VAT, mada cards alongside pay-later and cash on delivery, and peaks at Ramadan, Eid, Saudi National Day and White Friday on Google.com.sa. Read more on our Saudi Arabia Shopify SEO page.

Italy

Italian keyword research and copy rather than machine translation, IVA-inclusive EUR pricing, regional saldi, GDPR and cookie consent, and Made in Italy positioning for brands selling across the EU. See our Shopify SEO page for Italy.

How an international engagement works

Multi-market work follows the same four steps as every engagement, with each step run per market:

  1. Audit and baseline. We crawl every market version, filter Search Console by country, check hreflang, currency and structured data on each version, and compare you with local competitors in each Google domain. You get the audit and baseline numbers in writing. Start with the free Shopify SEO audit.
  2. Strategy and scope. We rank markets by opportunity and effort, decide which one comes first, and agree a fixed scope for each before work starts.
  3. Build and fix. Markets settings, translations and template changes are staged on a duplicated theme. You review every market version on a preview link before anything reaches the live store.
  4. Launch and track. Approved changes go live market by market. Ongoing clients get a private portal, monthly reporting broken down by country, and a monthly call to set priorities.

SEO is billed as a monthly retainer scoped to catalogue size, starting condition and the number of markets and languages involved. Quotes are scoped after the audit rather than taken from a rate card, and our pricing overview shows what goes into them.

06

Who international Shopify SEO suits

  • Brands with steady sales in one country that are ready to add a second or third market
  • Stores already using Shopify Markets whose non-home markets get little organic traffic
  • Brands deciding between Markets and expansion stores that want the SEO trade-offs set out before they build
  • Shopify Plus merchants running several regional stores that need consistent hreflang and reporting

The approach also depends on what you sell, so it helps to look at the types of stores we work with alongside your target markets.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Yes. With Shopify Markets, each country can have its own subfolder or domain, currency, language and hreflang signals. It ranks well when each market version has genuinely localised content, not just a different currency.

Subfolders on one domain are usually the stronger default, because every market shares the same authority. Country domains can help recognition in some markets and suit brands with separate stores, but each one has to earn its own authority.

Yes, as part of the scope. Keyword research and copy in languages such as French, Arabic or Italian are written or reviewed by native speakers, and each language gets its own keyword research rather than a translation of English terms.

Usually the one with the most existing demand and the lowest set-up cost. We look at where your current organic and paid traffic already comes from, language overlap and how competitive each country's results are.

Yes. Local SEO targets shoppers near a physical location. International SEO makes a store rank in several countries, which is about market set-up, language, hreflang and country-specific content.

It is a monthly retainer quoted after the free audit. The number of markets and languages, catalogue size and the store's starting condition drive the scope.
