Shopify Plus SEO for Large Catalogues, Markets and Multi-Store Brands

When a store has tens of thousands of URLs, several markets and a team of people changing it every week, SEO stops being a list of page fixes and becomes a question of structure and control. Our Shopify Plus SEO service is built for that scale: large catalogues, Shopify Markets and expansion stores, B2B catalogues, headless builds, and the governance and reporting that keep organic revenue growing while the business moves fast.

It is for ecommerce directors, heads of digital and in-house SEO leads at high-volume Shopify brands. It extends our core Shopify SEO service with the international, architectural and process work that only matters once a store reaches this size.

01

What changes when SEO moves to Shopify Plus

Shopify Plus SEO is search engine optimisation planned around the scale and structure of Plus stores. The ranking fundamentals are the same as on any Shopify plan, and the Plus plan itself does not rank better. What changes is the number of URLs at stake, the number of markets and stores involved, the number of people and apps editing the storefront, and the cost of a single template mistake repeated across the whole catalogue.

02

SEO for large Shopify catalogues

Rules at template level, not page level

Nobody hand-writes titles for tens of thousands of products. We define title, meta description and heading patterns per template, fed by product type, vendor, key attributes and metafields, then write custom copy only where search demand justifies it. Bulk changes to product data are handled through the Admin GraphQL API rather than one product at a time.

Faceted navigation and collection sprawl

Plus stores often run filters from Shopify Search and Discovery, tag-based collections and hundreds of automated collections. Each creates URLs. We decide which filter combinations match real searches and deserve a dedicated collection, and which should stay out of the index, then make sure internal links follow the same rules. The detailed canonical and robots.txt.liquid work belongs to our technical Shopify SEO team.

Variants, discontinued products and seasonal ranges

Should each colour be its own product with its own URL, or a variant of one product? The answer depends on whether people search for the colour. For discontinued lines, we set a policy: redirect to the closest replacement or collection, or keep the page live with alternatives if it still earns traffic and links. Seasonal ranges keep stable collection URLs so authority builds year after year.

Crawl efficiency without server logs

Shopify does not give merchants access to raw server logs. We use the Search Console crawl stats report, the page indexing report and sitemap-level comparisons to see how Googlebot spends its time across a large catalogue, and where it is wasting crawls on parameter and duplicate URLs.

03

International SEO with Shopify Markets

International growth is where Plus stores gain or lose the most organic traffic. The structure you choose decides how authority and content are shared.

SetupHow it worksSEO trade-offs
Subfolders on one domainMarkets served at paths such as /en-ca/ or /de/ on your main domainShares one domain's authority; simplest to manage; needs good translation and local content to avoid thin duplicates
Country domains in one storeEach market has its own domain connected to the same Shopify storeClear local signal to shoppers; authority is split across domains; more Search Console properties to manage
Expansion storesSeparate Shopify Plus stores per region or brandFull control of catalogue, pricing and content per region; hreflang between stores is not generated for you and must be built

Getting hreflang right

Shopify Markets generates hreflang annotations for the domains and subfolders configured in one store, but it can only reflect the configuration behind it. Common problems we fix: hreflang pointing at URLs that redirect, markets indexed with untranslated content, missing x-default, and automatic geolocation redirects that stop search engines from reaching other market versions. Across expansion stores, we design and implement hreflang between stores so each regional site is recognised as an alternate rather than a duplicate.

Localised content, not just translated content

Translated URL handles, market-specific metafields for copy and sizing, local currency in product structured data, and keyword research per market. A term that drives demand in the UK is often not the term used in the US or Australia for the same product.

04

B2B catalogues on Shopify Plus

B2B on Shopify lets Plus stores sell to companies with their own catalogues and price lists. SEO questions follow: which wholesale pages should be indexed, how to stop trade-only product copies from competing with retail pages, and whether trade buyers searching for bulk or wholesale terms need public landing pages. We set indexing rules and content for both audiences. Setting up the B2B features themselves is handled by our Shopify Plus development work.

05

Headless and Hydrogen SEO

A headless storefront, built with Hydrogen or another framework, does not inherit the SEO defaults a Shopify theme provides. Server rendering, meta tags, canonical tags, sitemap.xml, robots rules, structured data and redirects all have to be built by the project. We review headless builds before launch and audit live ones for pages that render content only in the browser, missing canonicals, broken redirects and sitemaps that leave out product routes. If you are still deciding whether to go headless, we set out the SEO cost of the choice before you commit.

06

Governance across teams and apps

On a large store, the biggest SEO risk is usually an unreviewed change: a merchandiser deleting a collection, a developer shipping a theme update, or an app injecting a second set of schema. Governance is part of the service:

  • SEO release checklist for theme deployments through Shopify CLI and GitHub, checked before anything is published.
  • Redirect policy for deleted products, renamed handles and retired collections, so URL redirects in Shopify Admin are created every time.
  • App review for SEO and page weight impact before new apps are installed, supported by our Shopify speed work.
  • Content and metafield standards so every team writes titles, descriptions and structured fields the same way.
  • Monitoring and alerts for sudden drops in indexed pages, robots.txt.liquid changes and title template changes.
07

Enterprise SEO reporting

Board-level questions need segmented answers. Reporting is built around how your business is organised:

  • Organic sessions and revenue by market, brand, category and template type
  • Non-brand vs brand organic performance, so growth is not just existing demand
  • Indexed URLs against sitemap URLs by content type
  • Core Web Vitals by template and market
  • Visibility for priority category terms against named competitors

Data comes from Search Console properties for each domain or subfolder, GA4 with market dimensions, and dashboards in Looker Studio. For very large sites, the Search Console bulk data export to BigQuery removes sampling limits.

08

Authority and content at scale

Scale does not remove the need for authority. Link work for Plus brands is assigned by market and target collection through our link building for Shopify brands. Content is planned per market and category cluster in a Shopify content strategy so regional teams do not duplicate or cannibalise each other.

How a Plus SEO engagement runs

  1. Audit and baseline. A full crawl across every market, Search Console review per property, speed tests on key templates in each region, a review of apps and deployment workflow, and a competitor gap analysis per market. You receive the audit document and segmented baseline numbers in writing.
  2. Strategy and scope. A roadmap ranked by revenue impact across markets and templates, with a realistic timeline that fits your release calendar. The scope is fixed and agreed with your stakeholders before work begins.
  3. Build and fix. Template changes, hreflang work and structured data are built on a duplicated theme or staging environment, or in your headless repository. Your team reviews each change on a preview link, and nothing reaches the live storefront without sign-off.
  4. Launch and track. Changes are released on your schedule. You get a private client portal with progress tracking, monthly segmented reporting and a monthly call to decide priorities across markets.

Who this service is for

Shopify Plus SEO fits brands with large or fast-changing catalogues, stores selling in several countries through Shopify Markets or expansion stores, businesses running retail and B2B side by side, and teams planning or running a headless storefront. A large-variant apparel brand launching in new markets gets most value from architecture and hreflang. A home and furniture brand with a smaller catalogue but several regional stores gets more from cross-store alternates and localised content.

If you are on Shopify Plus with a single market and a modest catalogue, our standard SEO retainer usually covers what you need.

13

Why work with us

We work only on Shopify and Shopify Plus. That focus means we know how Markets, expansion stores, B2B catalogues and Hydrogen actually behave, and where the platform handles SEO for you and where it does not. Every change is staged and approved before release, and reporting is built around your markets and teams rather than a generic template.

14

Pricing

Plus SEO is a monthly retainer scoped to catalogue size, number of markets or stores, and starting condition. There is no public rate card, and the scope is set after the free audit. See how our pricing is structured, or book a Shopify Plus SEO review to get a scoped proposal.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

No. The plan does not affect rankings. Plus stores need different SEO because of their scale, markets and team structure, not because Google treats the plan differently.

Subfolders usually suit brands that want to share one domain's authority and manage fewer properties. Country domains suit brands with strong local identities or legal reasons to separate markets. We recommend a structure after reviewing your markets, catalogue and existing authority.

For domains and subfolders configured within one store, yes, Shopify generates the annotations. Problems usually come from redirects, untranslated content or missing x-default. Across separate expansion stores, hreflang must be built.

It can be, if the build handles server rendering, meta tags, canonicals, sitemaps, structured data and redirects. None of these come for free the way they do with a theme, so SEO has to be part of the build plan.

We decide which trade pages should be indexed, keep trade-only duplicates out of the index, and create distinct pages for genuine wholesale searches so the two audiences reach the right pages.

It is a monthly retainer scoped to catalogue size, the number of markets or stores and the starting condition. The scope and fee are agreed after the free audit.

SEO work on this page covers architecture, content, markets and governance. Checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions, B2B setup and Flow belong to our Shopify Plus development service, and both can run from one shared roadmap.
